BESS Technical Due Diligence & EPC Procurement — The Buyer's Course

Know the risks before you buy a battery project.

A live online course from the organisers of the Energy Storage World Forum. It is for teams that buy or fund battery projects. The course has 8 live sessions over 5 weeks. You work through one realistic deal: a 100 MW / 400 MWh battery next to a 150 MWp solar farm. At the end, you review all the deal documents, as a buyer would. The first group starts on Tuesday 13 April 2027. There are 24 places.

  • Check if a revenue forecast is too positive. You will test five things: how much energy the battery can really deliver, energy lost in charging and discharging, power used for cooling, how often the battery can run, and how fast it loses capacity over time.
  • Judge a supplier on more than its "Tier 1" label. Check if the company is financially strong enough to pay for a 15-year warranty.
  • Find the contract terms that move risk from the contractor to you. Compare offers on their total cost over the project's life, not only on the starting price.
  • Write acceptance tests (the checks a battery must pass before you pay). Make sure they protect you if there is a dispute.

Worked example

A 100 MWh battery project costs roughly $12.5–17.7m. One 1% mistake costs about €110,000–150,000.

Who it is for. For teams that buy or fund battery projects: utilities, independent power producers, data centres, investors and banks. You should know basic engineering and finance words. You do not need to be a battery expert.

It is not open to battery manufacturers or integrators.

Our refund promise

You get a full refund if all three of these are true:

  1. You attend at least 6 of the 8 live sessions.
  2. You hand in your written list of risks. This is the list you build during the course for a practice battery deal, with the questions to ask the seller. You can go through it with the course leader in a private session.
  3. You ask for the refund within 14 days of the last session, telling us the course was not useful to you.

You keep all the templates and tools, even if you get a refund.
